Introducing John CORCORAN; IPA member 34

John is a former member of NSW Police: 1957 – 1966.

For the last sixty years he has been a collector of antique firearms, with a specific interest in British target rifles – percussion and early breech-loading.  

His collection also includes other rifles and handguns, preferably where he is able to establish provenance.

John is interested in books on firearms and shooting and has a library of about 700 titles, dating from current back to 1834.

John has also published a number of articles.

In 1975, when John was Honorary Historian for the New South Wales Rifle Association, he published “The Target Rifle in Australia 1860 to 1900.’ which was re-published in 1995 in the USA. This is a work regarded as the definitive history of competitive rifle shooting in Australia, from 1860 until Federation.

As a young man John worked as a stockman in the Northern Territory and Queensland (there were no road trains or helicopters in those days), and developed an interest in spurs, which he also collects.

In 2003 he published ‘Horsemen of the Outback – Their Spurs and Their Spurmakers.’, being stories of the drovers, stockmen and blacksmiths of the 1950s and before. This was re-printed in 2005 and at the moment a revised edition, with more material included, is being finalised.

John is interested in hearing from any member with similar interests.
